Rochelle and Robert Gluckstein and Family B'nai Mitzvah Program
Beit T'Shuvah has a radical idea of what it means to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Bar or Bat Mitzvah literally means, “One of the Commandments.” At Beit T'Shuvah, however, mitzvah does not merely mean commandment; it means connection. Our B'nai Mitzvah Program works to guide individuals and their family to discover their connection to the Jewish tradition, community, and a joyful and meaningful life.

A Personalized Program and Ceremony
Through a personalized approach that works for each individual family, we work to form relevant and meaningful connections to the Torah and prayers, to a rabbi and cantor, and to a Jewish community with opportunities to participate and be of service. We invite families and the Bar or Bat Mitzvah to co-create a ceremony that is both connected to the ancient values of the Jewish tradition and to their own personalities, strengths, and interests.

In less than a year, through study, experiential learning, and personal relationships, our program honors and celebrates how each family's timely narrative is woven into the timeless collective.

A 6-Month Program: What We Do
Over the course of 6 months, our clergy provide a robust and meaningful program of Jewish learning for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah and family, as well as comprehensive Hebrew skills training. Our approach involves 4 components:

  • Emphasis on Relevant Judaism. Students and their family will study with clergy, stressing Judaism as an enduring approach to living healthy, productive, and meaningful lives.
  • You Co-create Your Ceremony. Students will be given the opportunity to co-create and design their ceremony with clergy. They will also collaborate with our Creative Arts Department to enrich their ceremony with personal passions and talents (e.g., music, fine art, and theater).
  • Service/Tikkun Olam. Each student will be engaged in meaningful service learning experiences both within Beit T'Shuvah and the greater community. They will engage in social action projects, advocacy, and service learning. (Hours may be counted toward community service hours).
  • Skills. Students work with Beit T'Shuvah clergy to build necessary skills for confident mastery of B'nai Mitzvah material.
